Message from the President
As we enter into a season of reflection and renewal, your Executive is reviewing events of this past year and building on those reflections to set goals for the 2010-2011 school year. One initiative we are working on, in partner-ship with Board, is to streamline the paid Designated Occasional Teacher PD process – registration, implementation and compensation. Look for improvements next year!
Because of the number of unfilled vacancies this year (28 on Fri., March 26; 22 on Wed., March 24), the Board will be hiring 75 new Occasional Teachers (from those who applied to last summer’s posting). If you are unable to work for a day, please make yourself unavailable in TVARRIS; this prevents the system from getting bogged down calling members who are not able to work that day.
This is also a reminder to become familiar with your Collective Agreement; it has come to our attention that some members are unaware of article 16.05 c) which states that “An Occasional Teacher who cancels a previously accepted assignment may not accept an-other assignment scheduled for that same day.” You can find your agreement online via the Employee Portal or our Local site www.etfotvots.com.
You may have read the comments of Executive Superintendent Mike Sereda published in the London Free Press on Thursday, March 25, 2010 in which he states “Don’t go into teaching if you want a full-time permanent job.” While this is an accurate but disappointing summary of the job situation, the opportunity for you to excel as an Occasional Teacher is still there. Occasional Teaching, with its scheduling flexibility and the opportunity to interact in a variety of schools, allows you to build a strong base of diverse experiences upon which to draw as your career progresses. Maintain your enthusiasm and enjoy all that this rewarding career has to offer!
